Enhancing Fungal Diagnostics Gary Procop MD

Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to,
1. Identify the newly classified pathogen, Rasamsonia.
2. Determine the strengths and limitations of PCR and morphologic methods for the detection of Pneumocystis.
3. Defend the position of sending only a urine or a serum specimen, but not both, for Histoplasma antigen testing

Antifungals: drug susceptibility testing, resistant mechanisms, and uncommon/emerging resistant fungi including Candida auris Sean Zhang, MD PhD D(ABMM)

Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to,
1. Describe the current antifungal drug susceptibility testing methods, including a few new methods.
2. Review the common antifungal drug resistant mechanisms
3. Recognize the emerging antifungal drug resistant fungi, including Candida auris.

Antibacterial Susceptibility Testing Basics Sandra Richter MD

Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to,
1. Describe antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods available for bacteria.
2. Discuss use of special phenotypic and molecular methods to detect antimicrobial resistance.
3. Determine when AST should be performed and how to troubleshoot unusual results.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to,
1. Understand factors used to determine AST breakpoint
2. Interpret AST results by MIC and disk diffusion
3. Perform AST QC testing

Use of CLSI Guidelines in Antimicrobial Stewardship Elizabeth Palavecino, MD

Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to,
1. Describe the role of CLSI in providing antimicrobial susceptibility testing guidelines
2. Understand how CLSI sets up breakpoints and how to implement them in the microbiology laboratory
3. Understand how to use CLSI antimicrobial susceptibility testing guidelines for the interpretation and reporting of antimicrobial susceptibility results for antimicrobial stewardship purposes
