Overview of whole genome sequencing, bioinformatics, and how genomic data can be used for outbreak investigations and surveillance in Ohio.


OBJECTIVES:

  • Review the basics of whole genome sequencing
  • Outline the basics of bioinformatics
  • Summarize genomic epidemiology (how genomics can be used in public health for outbreak investigations and surveillance)

DESCRIPTION:

In this session, Bekah & Natalie will define MDROs and CROs and identify which MDROs CDC has identified as urgent threats. They will describe the impact of MDROs and how to prevent the spread. They will outline the laboratory testing, results, and interpretations of carbapenem resistance and how these factors can help guide infection control.


OBJECTIVES:

  • Define MDRO and CRO and identify those of highest concern
  • Summarize laboratory testing of MDRO/CRO and why/how this testing can help mitigate transfer within a facility
  • Identify the burden of MDRO/CRO on healthcare and prevention strategies and laboratory testing can help stop the spread and reduce the burden
